Freeport is the largest city on the Grand Bahama island, located in the northwestern side of the Bahamas. The city is a popular place to visit whether you’re planning your own visit to the Bahamas or stopping by on a cruise. Either way, the following activities are a great way to spend time in Freeport!

Port Lucaya

If you visit on a cruise, start with a walk around the Lucayan harbor. You’ll see rows of brightly colored houses and charming shops and restaurants. Then head to Port Lucaya, just a short drive away. This area features everything from incredible architecture to some of the world’s most beautiful golf courses. Port Lucaya is also the perfect place to go shopping and sample delicious cuisine. The marketplace is the best area to find shopping stalls and try your hand at bargaining. There are also plenty of beaches located nearby.

Lucayan National Park

The Lucayan National park is another must-see! The park features forty acres and three different eco-systems. Here you’ll find great walking trails. One of them will take you to the largest underwater cave system in the world. While you’re not allowed to swim in the caves, it’s still a great place to take in some natural beauty and snap some photos.

On the other side of the park, you can visit Gold Rock Beach, one of the nicest beaches in Freeport. The beach offers soft, fine sand and brilliant blue waters. Some scenes from the hit Pirates of the Caribbean movie were shot at this location.

Garden of the Groves

Another popular activity is to tour the Garden of the Groves. You can walk, bike, or even take a jeep tour. The gardens feature a wide variety of tropical flowers, ponds, and fountains. They’re also famous for their beautiful cascading waterfalls. It’s a great place to go for a stroll and listen to the many tropical birds. As an added bonus, it’s located near the International Bazaar, a great place to do some souvenir shopping.

Unexso Marine Sanctuary

Consider visiting the Unexso Marine Sanctuary. This sanctuary features nineteen acres of marine reserve, complete with a dolphin lagoon.  Here you can learn to dive or swim and play with dolphins. You can also snorkel or dive in the lagoon, home to turtles, stingrays, nurse sharks, and other sea life.
